Good nutrition is an important part of the care we provide at St Richard’s Hospice, and every meal we serve is an opportunity to bring comfort, nourishment and a moment of joy to patients and their families.
We’re looking for kind, friendly, and compassionate volunteers to join the team in Hospitality on the In-Patient Unit (IPU), where you’ll play a vital role in helping us deliver nutritious, delicious, and thoughtfully prepared meals, supporting our catering and nursing teams to ensure mealtimes are dignified and enjoyable experiences.
What’s involved?
- Liaising with nursing staff to understand the dietary needs of each patient
- Discussing menu options, alternatives, and special requests with patients and relatives
- Taking meal orders
- Collecting patients’ trays from their rooms after they’ve eaten, while sharing a warm smile and conversation
- Making hot drinks for patients and visitors
- Refreshing water jugs in patients’ rooms
- Keeping the visitor kitchen stocked with supplies such as coffee, tea and milk so they can make themselves drinks, and ensuring the family rooms are replenished.
This role could be a great fit for you, if you are:
- Able to understand and maintain personal and professional boundaries, and ensure patient safety and confidentiality
- Able to communicate clearly and listen attentively
- Caring, friendly and approachable
- Inclusive and non-judgemental
- Reasonably fit and active (the role involves regularly walking the length of the In-patient Unit)
- Comfortable volunteering with patients who may be at the end of their lives, and their relatives
- Reliable and proactive
- Emotionally strong and resilient.
Please note: volunteers will be asked to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check for this role.
Interview: enquiring individuals will be asked to attend a volunteer interview. This is a great opportunity for us to get to know each other, find out more about your skills and interests, answer any questions you may have, and discuss in more detail the expectations of volunteering and your availability. Dates for interview can be arranged as per your own availability and the availability of the Hospitality Co-ordinator and Volunteer Engagement Officer.
When is help needed: we’re looking for volunteers who can offer a minimum of one shift a month on a Saturday and/or Sunday, 11am–2:30pm.
