Sample Courier Volunteer (In-patient Unit)

We’re looking for reliable, responsible and adaptable volunteers to spare a little time and make a big difference to patient care by collecting clinical samples from our In-patient Unit (IPU) and delivering them safely to Worcestershire Royal Hospital. Your support will help ensure samples reach the hospital promptly for testing.

What’s involved?

  • Collecting prepared samples from the IPU at St Richard’s Hospice and taking them to Worcestershire Royal Hospital
  • Delivering the samples to hospital staff at the pathology counter, and returning to St Richard’s to confirm the delivery and sign out
  • Reporting any issues with delivering samples to the Head of the In-patient Unit or shift co-ordinator on duty
  • Following simple but important procedures and process to ensure the safe collection and delivery of samples
  • You may occasionally be asked to collect blood bottles from the hospital, and return other medical devices to the appropriate department (full instructions will be provided)
  • You may occasionally be asked to deliver prescriptions to the pharmacy at the hospital (full instructions will be provided).

This role could be a great fit for you, if you are:

  • Reasonable physically fit and comfortable walking the footpath between St Richard’s Hospice and the Worcestershire Royal Hospital
  • Comfortable being out and about in different weather conditions
  • Emotionally strong and resilient
  • Able to communicate clearly, and follow guidance and instructions
  • Flexible, as there may be some days and weeks when there are no samples to collect
  • Caring, friendly and approachable
  • Contactable by phone at 1pm on your chosen day for volunteering and able to get to the hospice within 30 minutes if needed
  • Able to respect and maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries
  • Inclusive and non-judgemental
  • Comfortable carrying a small bag of samples (no more than 1kg).

Please note that volunteers will be asked to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check for this role.

Interview: enquiring individuals will be asked to attend a volunteer interview/informal chat. This is an opportunity for us to get to know each other, find out more about your interests and availability, answer any questions you may have, and discuss in more detail the Sample Courier role and expectations of volunteering.

When is help needed: this role is currently available on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. On your preferred day of volunteering, the In-patient Unit Administrator will call you at 1pm to let you know if there are any samples that need taking to the hospital. If there are samples ready, we will ask you to make your way to St Richard’s for 1.30pm to collect them.

Reports to: Head of In-patient Unit, and IPU Administrator

Location: St Richard’s Hospice, Wildwood Drive, Worcester WR5 2QT
