Katherine Downey

Interim Learning Lead

Katherine is a Registered Nurse with more than 20 years’ experience across a range of settings and locations in the West Midlands, predominantly in the field of complex discharge where her roles have included Team Leader, and Matron.

Katherine joined St Richard’s Hospice in 2019 as a Learning Facilitator, and in October 2025 she took on the role of Interim Learning Lead which she finds varied and interesting.

Her role includes planning, delivering and evaluating learning, and supporting staff in their individual learning journeys, as well as leading the learning team. Katherine also promotes Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) within her IPC link role, she is a safeguarding advocate, and a Mental Health First Aider. In addition to this, Katherine leads the Clinical Supervision project for the hospice.

Lucy Gallagher

Learning Facilitator

Lucy qualified as a Registered Nurse in 1988 in Sheffield and has worked in various specialities including HIV and AIDs, school nursing, community nursing and with older adults.

Before moving to Worcestershire, Lucy worked in London, Brighton and Oxford. Lucy joined the St Richard’s Hospice Learning Team in January 2020.

In her role, and working with the other members of the team, Lucy supports the delivery of statutory, mandatory, and role enhancement learning. This ensures staff keep up-to-date with changes in health and social care.

Lucy also leads on the delivery of outreach learning for staff working in care agencies, residential, and nursing homes. This is a part of her role she particularly enjoys.

Karl Gardner

Learning and Resource Centre Administrator and Learning Support Officer

Karl started his career as a prison librarian. He left offender learning behind to work as an additional learning support tutor for healthcare apprentices, before starting at St Richard’s in 2019.

Karl’s role involves collating and analysing data and using this to produce statistical reports.

In addition, Karl provides teaching support and contributes to the delivery of learning in non-clinical subjects.

He is the IT guru in the team and during the pandemic supported patients, families, and staff in accessing platforms such as zoom.

Beckie Stewart

Learning and Resource Administrator

Beckie has been working in administration for more than 23 years in various sectors including advertising and marketing, architecture, and logistics. 

She joined St Richard’s Hospice as Education Administrator in June 2009.

Beckie works part time, Wednesday to Friday, and is responsible for post course administration.

This includes evaluation data, keeping database records, providing reports, and managing the Learning Hub’s finances.
